Wouter Smit - Meet the Teachers

Wouter's mission is for everyone he teaches to be able to access the realm of the heart. The heart is the seat of the soul. Living in close connection to our hearts, means a connected life of fulfillment, the only life truly worthy of your time. He teaches with special sets of pranayama (breathing exercises) to empty the mind, and make student teachers more receptive to the soft voice of their hearts. Then Wouter will guide you through a series of slow although intense series of Vinyasa Flows of intermediate postures, to wake up the entire physical body and to learn how to feel deeply into the body. Finally student teachers will sink deep into their hearts, drawing new power from the divine source within, revitalizing batteries and gaining new insights into the workings of the heart. Wouter Smit’s aim is to lead you from the personal realm to yoga. With smooth flowing sequences of asanas on inspiring music, lot’s of attention will be given to the actual meeting of the steady, happy posture. Convinced that the world will become a more beautiful place when people live from their hearts, he will encourage you to find your heart and develop the power to stand for it.

The Growth of Yoga

"It continues to make me happy to watch yoga develop and grow from something that was previously viewed as something on the ‘alternative’ fringes of society to a more mainstream practice that can genuinely be accessed by people from all walks of life. I want to teach yoga in order to be part of this process; to give others tools to increase their physical and psychological well-being"

INVERSION IMMERSIONS WORKSHOPS

Spice up your inversions!

Saturday 29th June: Focus Śraddhā in Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand)

The Saturday Asana session is a recipe to spend longer in Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) and to explore variations including Padmasana in Sarvangasana.
We will practice sequences designed to facilitate interesting and tasty variations while you are upside down. There will be some dynamic asana as a
starter, deeper hip opening postures as a palate cleanser and a hearty main course of Sarvangasana. Both Salamba and Nirlamba.
We will work with an initial diagnostic technique to establish the necessity for four blocks and a belt, however we would ask that all participants bring four
blocks and a belt as they are an integral part of the session and the process.
We will include some Mudra and Bandha for good measure.
All levels welcome, read up on Viparati Karani Mudra in the HYP and immerse yourself in the sun and the moon element of this posture.

All of the ingredients to warm up towards this highly accessible Asana!
We will practice sequences designed to facilitate you enjoying your time upside down.

Sunday 30th June: Focus Śraddhā in Pincha Mayurasana (Forearm Balance)

All of the colours of a bazaar come alive within the gateways to this posture. All levels welcome. Read up on the Peacock and the relevance to Kriya in the
HYP and this Tail Feather version really gives a colourful vibration. Bring your foam block as a support.

Yoga Teacher Training 2013: Our Teachers

The Ibiza Bija Yoga Alliance 200-hour Teacher Training Course is an intensive, residential course led by Jacqueline Purnell BWY FCT, E-RYT 500 Yoga Alliance Teacher. The three week course leads to a professional qualification which reflects ancient values at work in the modern world, where professionalism and the yoga of the Sanskrit scriptures meet.

The friendships and camaraderie engendered by the demanding schedule makes the process very uplifting and you will learn how to teach with confidence. Yogashala Ibiza teachers are accredited by the Yoga Alliance and our yoga teacher training programs comply with the standards established by the Alliance.

Meet the teachers:

Judith Secanell

Judith has grown up with modern and contemporary dance, and gymnastics. It has always been her passion and is a life long commitment. Her body is her focus, and to enhance her skills and abilities, she is now a yoga teacher.

She learnt her first “sun salutation” in Art Dramatic School where she studied to be an actress and then where she graduated from university (Cinema). After college she performed in many theatres across Spain, and has worked in TV roles and independent Spanish films and is still very active in productions as an actress and dancer, particularly in Musicals. Judith’s first Yoga experience was in Barcelona many years ago, with Kundalini Yoga, where she studied under “Laia Espot”.

For the past five years Judith has immersed herself in daily yoga practice and has studied with various teachers and types of yoga including Vinyasa, Kundalini, Hatha Dinamic and Asthanga. Her passion for Dance, Gymnastics, Theatre and Yoga, (and her passion for life and body improvement) recently took her to New York where she studied Yoga and became a certified Yoga Teacher.

For Judith, Yoga provides the perfect grounding in life and helps maintain calm in our busy city lives and has really enjoyed the transition from the Gym to the Yoga mat. She studied a 200 hour course of Vinyasa Yoga at the New York based “Three Sisters Yoga School” and recently graduated under the guidance of Jen Whinnen Vinyasa Style.

She is now a certified Vinyasa Yoga Teacher and Hatha Dinamic by the Yoga Alliance.

Yoga has given her a new found awareness and connection with her body, mind and spirit and it is this awareness and connection that she wants to share and pass on to her students. She believes that it is important to live a life full of passion and love, and her classes are bursting full of this. She loves the sense of community that yoga brings and she is grateful to be able to share it with her students. With humor and creative sequencing, her classes explore the efficiency of movement from pose to pose, focused on alignment, breath and interesting techniques. The choreographer in her has resulted in her creating innovative and unique “Vinyasa Sequences”.

Give Good Karma!

Our guest blogger today is the lovely Beth McNeil. Beth is currently completing her teacher training at Yogashala . Here she gives a thoughtful review of Karma Yoga practice and what it means in daily life. Thank you Beth!

**Karma Yoga is one of the many different types or ‘schools’ of yoga. Whereas ‘Hatha yoga’ concentrates on the physical and Bhakti the spiritual, Karma yoga joins the physical and mental and concentrates on an attitude with which a person approaches them both. It focuses on acting through selfless duty without even considering any selfish reward – be it a tangible or intangible one. It is actually incredibly complex and could be analysed and interpreted in many different ways. While looking for an example to demonstrate this complexity, I am reminded of an episode of the TV soap ‘Friends’ where characters Phoebe and Joey argue about whether there is such a thing as a ‘selfless good deed’ – because people generally act so that they can ultimately feel better which is of course the result of their good deed – so the way they acted was ultimately not purely selfless. In addition, if a person acts in a selfless manner and with true compassion towards another person, this may actually result in a negative outcome for a third party so their action was not 100% positive. This then leads to the topic of a past life with reincarnations, and the theory that if you work through the positives and the negatives in each life, with no expectation of reward, you will reach a final pure destiny - but this could take a good few incarnations. Good deeds are thought to cancel out self-centered deeds of the past. This topic probably runs the risk of being over-analysed but the principles are clear: Give Give Give! Give good actions under all circumstances and believe them to be directed to the divine consciousness at every step of execution. It is thought that practicing Karma yoga is the basic step before any other form of yoga can be practiced.**

Your mission for this glorious weekend is to GIVE GIVE GIVE. And then come back and tell us the results!

Stefania Barker: Yoga Alliance Teacher Training Ibiza May 26th 2012

Born in Rome, Italy, Stefania has studied yoga for over eleven years. In 2008 Stefania gained The British Wheel of Yoga Teacher Diploma after studying under Jacqueline Purnell.
Jacqueline Purnell BritishWheel of Yoga Diploma Course Tutor & Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 500 for the Yoga Alliance.

Stefania's Testimonial about Jacqueline after her BWY Teacher Training:

“I have known Jacqueline for a number of years now; as my interest in yoga deepened, my appreciation of Jacqueline's value as a yoga teacher grew exponentially. I had practiced yoga with several different teachers when the time came I decided I wanted to be a teacher too; my choice of Jacqueline as my tutor was easy because I could clearly see she was the 'real deal'. Her knowledge of yoga in all its aspects is vast and her teaching style is adaptable to all levels of students, so that everybody attending her classes benefits in some way. The BWY Teacher Training Course I started over 2 years ago is drawing to an end. Jacqueline has made it thoroughly enjoyable through her varied teaching methods, constant support and by creating a very friendly atmosphere in the group. I am now confident I can teach yoga and enjoy doing so, forever striving to raise my standards closer to those of my dear tutor Jacqueline.”

After Jacqueline had introduced her to her beloved Teacher's Sharon and David the founders of Jivamukti Yoga in 2006, Stefania was inspired to follow in Jacqueline's footsteps and acquire their Teacher Training.

In 2010 she studied at the Omega Institute in New York with Sharon Gannon and David Life, gaining the Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Certification. Her classes are in a challenging vinyasa style (flowing asana sequences) to music, and incorporate breathing, meditation and deep relaxation.

David and Sharon also studied closely with Jacqueline's Guru known as Guruji: Shri Pattabhi Jois who taught the Astanga Vinyasa Tradition of Yoga at his home in Mysore India and was responsible through his tireless teaching for bringing Astanga Vinyasa to the west.

Stefania Barker will be teaching alongside Jacqueline Purnell and Chris James on the Yogashala Ibiza Teacher Training Course in June 2012. If you fancy a 'taster' for the course then why not attend a class or workshop with Stefania at The Garden Studio, 1a Overdale Road in South Ealing, W5.

For more information please contact us or email Stefania at beherenowyoga@hotmail.co.uk

The Terms of Engagement

The Terms of Engagement:

Distracted doesn’t even begin. Perhaps “anxiously anticipating, elated and overzealous, with a hint of nervous, a top note of free floating-mind wandering, and a smooth, detached finish,” would better describe it! Yes, that rings a bit closer to the truth. Just one month until teacher training begins, and I cannot sit still! Work seems an unnecessary detour; the stiffness from eight hours at a desk, a flagrant attack and undermining of my increased hours on the mat. Depressing news posts, endless chatter of economic woes, and worries of any sort, fall short to the calm and clarity following my morning meditations. Nights out on the town with friends appear a nuisance, as I’ve hopes of catching the sunrise the next morning instead, after discovering it an ethereal escape into a sliver of spirituality, a thrill unlike any glass of wine or champagne. Adventuring to new neighborhoods and restaurant openings has lost its luster just the same, as my increased awareness that energy poured into food preparations and organic farming methods hold equal importance to the food itself, and I am often left feeling sick, not of culinary joy! Even writing this post proves hard, as I’m sitting in front a computer, when really I am curious beyond imagination how breath, cellular function, and chakras integrate, or how I might incorporate Reiki trainings and Ayurvedic studies into potential asana sequences, and envisaging the change I want to bring through yoga. Well, then again, having listed it all, I suppose distracted will do. So yes, distracted, that I am! But, engaged? Well that’s clearly something I haven’t left room for in all of my Ibiza preparations. In fact, am paradoxically doing just the opposite of what yoga teaches us!

In defense of my distracted ways, however, this training is the first goal I have allowed myself to indulge in since my days playing college athletics. Since then, I have essentially banned myself from pursuing anything in full, until I knew it to be the right goal, as I have a drive stronger than I like to admit, one that led to three knee surgeries, a severely compromised immune system, and a lifetime of physical limitations. Albeit, I did achieve my goal of competing in college athletics, I realize now that my unwavering drive was more an unconscious state of disengagement than an admirable fortitude; it came with great compromise and an inevitable crash, that ironically enough, led me to yoga, so I cannot wave my finger too harshly on the experience, but should remain unforgiving to heed the lessons learned from it. Since playing, goal abstinence and yoga have been my protector and insight.

In the past month, since fully committing to teacher training, I find myself in old territory of blind ambition, and I am forced to ask what is my goal, after all? To abandon compassion or connection to others, desert favorite pastimes, and ignore all realities that do not mold me into a teacher?! No, no, I think not!! My goal is to bring the same health and well being of mind, body, and spirit, that yoga has brought me! But there is a greater truth to be acknowledged here, not just the ah-hah moment, but the struggle. I struggle, just as I did in over training my hurt knee, to not outstretch myself in my yogic objectives. My ambition is a reality, and as yoga has taught me, there is good and bad in everything and it is in fully accepting the entire truth, that we may choose the good.

And that is one goal, that through the teachings of, and teaching of yoga, I can achieve! But, I must remain engaged in it. After all, remaining mindful of breath and posture, while exploring a new restaurant is the same awareness as, and may even require more grit than, resolving to wake at dawn to hear the grass bristling at the pond near my house, in the hours before anyone is awake to clutter its song. Engaging with others might bring stress and distraction, but also gives way to a surprise belly laughter, producing similar effects of Agniprasana (breath of fire), but also insight to the interconnectedness and divinity of all things. The goal of yoga is not an unremitting tranquility, but rather a dogged intent to remain present and fully engaged. Engagement, requires forgiveness of the past, a compassion of the present, a patience for the future, and to remain neutral in the analysis of each. That is the goal, and the joy of yoga.

One month to go, and nothing but a mat and mindfulness to keep me on track!

Paz, love, joie!

A journey to Yoga Teacher Training

Diving into Ibiza!

December 2005:

Home to New Orleans, after five months of displacement to Texas, following Hurricane Katrina. To say life had changed was an understatement of outstanding proportion. Days were limited to the light of the sun and moon, as electricity was sparse. The soundtrack of the city no longer trumpeted with vibrant swirls of activity, but hummed a quiet whimper of the national guard’s tanks and the city’s defeated sighs. Groceries and cafes only opened a few days a week, and old friends and familiar faces were hard to find. My days oscillated between resolute optimism and feelings of despair. With each passing day, it became more evident that life as I remembered had washed away, and that in order to re-enter consciousness, change was in order.

I couldn’t stand another moment of conversation on the dire forecast of recovery or nostalgia of how it used to be. I couldn’t stand another moment in front of the television, read another headline, or bear another defeated word. So, without much to do, direction to go, or people to see, I set out and walked. A lot. Although the area of map I covered was limited by huge stretches of devastation, I walked as far and long as I could, hoping to find life again. After weeks of aimless wandering, my dog refused to join, my hips ached, and it dawned on me: walking in circles around a city distraught by upheaval, was no more a life than stewing on the trauma of the past or fearing its possible doom. I could walk for years, on the edge of consciousness, never engaging fully in the past-future conversations, and feel productive in it. Yet no amount of walking, metaphorical or literal, could pardon our reality, nor outwit the fears of the community. Fear and hope were the reality of the return to New Orleans, whether I liked it or not! The only way to avoid drowning in the flood of my own avoidance was to dive into the present… both good and bad.

So I picked up my dog’s leash, headed back down the street, and dove into the plane of reality that was New Orleans. Like the city, I felt scared, hurt, hopeful, and determined. I opened my eyes and ears, and listened for how I might help it’s recovery, how I might help it rebuild, and how I might remain grounded in its reality even when it does not suit me. And at that moment, I found yoga…well, no, it is more accurate to say, yoga found me!

I saw a post outside the tennis club for a new Saturday morning yoga class. Ah hah, change!! At the time, all I knew about yoga was based on the unwrapped video from years ago, that my mom gave me in high school, after an invasive knee surgery, to help deal with stress. I pulled down the post to share with my mom… and in our cynically frozen, yet hopeful state, we shrugged our shoulders and said “why not?!”

That next Saturday did not hold the jubilant promise of a new beginning or facilitate the reentering of consciousness, however. Instead, it slapped with fear; fear of letting go of the old means of coping, of letting go of what was. I wanted to backpedal into my aimless walking, but already knew that I hadn’t out-walked this! So I went to yoga. I knew, just as I did the first time I jumped off the high dive at age six, life was never to be the same.

August 2011:

Six years later, I look back at this, and realize how far yoga has taken me, spiritually, mentally, and physically.... I hardly recognize that image as me! I also know that my journey in yoga is incomplete. As my first entry into consciousness taught me, remaining in it requires an unremitting commitment. Today I find myself feeling similarly displaced, where neither the past nor present remain relevant to my path. From Katrina to my corporate world of Chicago, I dove deep into the trenches of reality. The currents have taken me through rapid and stagnant waters, and through the crystal clear acceptance of fear. I’ve learned to surf, to wade, to float, and paddle; to see synchronicities and trust their guidance. And here I am, up for air: sensing my spirituality and the oneness of all things, with the acceptance that reality has changed, yet again…. and the crackling excitement of knowing, that I too, must change, and choose consciousness, all over again…

In early June, this pending change became irrefutable. Signs were all around me: new friends, overheard words, seemingly accidental conversations, and dreams of October. Unsure of what direction to go, I refocused on yoga, for clarity. I went to the Internet, searching for both Spanish and French lessons, and a new yoga class. Not altogether, but by the genius of Google, the combined query produced YogaShala Teacher Training, in Ibiza, Spain, in October. Ahh hah!! Although I had investigated several teacher training programs in years past, all of which in India, when I saw YogaShala, I knew it was the one.... And I recognized that moment, as after Katrina, where I could choose to keep on walking the periphery of this past world, or dive into consciousness. I submitted final payment and application this morning.

Although immediately bombarded by thoughts of what will October bring, through my trust and path in Yoga, in Oneness, I have not the desire to backpedal or fear what will be. Instead, I embrace an unprecedented courage and inspiration… Countdown to Ibiza: 2 months!

Paz, Love, Joie!

Stefania Barker: Yoga Teacher Training Ibiza May 26th 2012

Born in Rome, Italy, Stefania has studied yoga for over eleven years. In 2008 Stefania gained The British Wheel of Yoga Teacher Diploma after studying under Jacqueline Purnell British Wheel of Yoga Diploma Course Tutor & Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 500 for the Yoga Alliance.

Her Testimonial about Jacqueline after her BWY Teacher Training:

After Jacqueline had introduced her to her beloved Teacher's Sharon and David the founders of Jivamukti Yoga in 2006 Stefania was inspired to follow in Jacqueline's footsteps and acquire their Teacher Training.

A day in the life of a Yoga Teacher Trainee

Woke up at 5.30am when the alarm went off. Left the hotel and started the 10 min walk to the yoga retreat. My roommate and myself decided to walk in silence as recommended by our teacher so I used this time to practice my positive affirmation.

Arrived at the centre and swept the platform ready for our morning meditation. The group did really well and we managed to sit for 40 minutes. I’ve really progressed in my personal meditation and would never have imagined meditating for this long at home. Being away from everything and listening to the nearby sounds of the waves and crickets have really helped. Something feels different being on the island. Is it the energy?

After meditation we discussed the Bhagavad Gita by using study cards and texts. Reading the book before I got here has really helped. We looked behind the use of metaphor and how we could apply the meaning to our lives today.

8am Jacqueline led a yoga class and incorporated some different styles into the practice as well as the 'Sivananda' inspired sequence that we have been learning.

10am we went up to the house, blessed the food and had some well needed brunch cooked lovingly by Sol. Decided to go down to the beach for our 4 hour break and do some revision for the exam. Also need to think about my sequence for the demonstration.

As always 2pm came around very quickly. We all congregated by the pool for our afternoon lecture on anatomy and physiology. I wish I had listened more in my science classes! We then did our teaching practice, which went quite well today. I was chosen to teach the sun salutations. I’m really starting to grasp the sequence now – thank goodness!

Ate a delicious vegetarian curry for supper and then we all did our designated jobs (karma yoga) I watered the garden and swept the area by the pool . Tried to do my positive affirmations again but Jonathon was making me laugh with his impressions!

Settled down at 8pm on the platform for my favourite time of the day. It feels so peaceful and settling when the sun goes down. There is something about the evening energy that brings us closer together as a group. Maybe its because the topics of discussion are usually quite intimate and powerful. Today we discussed reincarnation. Finished at 10pm and walked back to the hotel with the others.

Fell in to bed extremely tired. Realised once again however that it was that lovely tired that I used to experience as a child having spent the day with the horses. Not the stressed, computer induced lethargy that I have been experiencing all to often in recent years.
