Wouter Smit - Meet the Teachers

Wouter's mission is for everyone he teaches to be able to access the realm of the heart. The heart is the seat of the soul. Living in close connection to our hearts, means a connected life of fulfillment, the only life truly worthy of your time. He teaches with special sets of pranayama (breathing exercises) to empty the mind, and make student teachers more receptive to the soft voice of their hearts. Then Wouter will guide you through a series of slow although intense series of Vinyasa Flows of intermediate postures, to wake up the entire physical body and to learn how to feel deeply into the body. Finally student teachers will sink deep into their hearts, drawing new power from the divine source within, revitalizing batteries and gaining new insights into the workings of the heart. Wouter Smit’s aim is to lead you from the personal realm to yoga. With smooth flowing sequences of asanas on inspiring music, lot’s of attention will be given to the actual meeting of the steady, happy posture. Convinced that the world will become a more beautiful place when people live from their hearts, he will encourage you to find your heart and develop the power to stand for it.

Andy Murray invests in Yoga and it shows

Ten_Minute_Yoga.jpg

Congratulations Andy Murray!

How exciting and how evenly matched the players were yesterday, however the sheer fluidity of Andy and the Grace seemed to outclass his opponent and more subtley his ability to relax.

Flexibility and Stamina go hand to hand when we invest in Yoga.

I have been blessed to teach yoga to many Olympic sportsmen and women and yoga always gives an extra dimension, the meditative aspect of yoga and the finding of inner strength.

There is an idea using one of the metaphysical aspects of yoga that could be translated into modern day sports such as Tennis. That is that when a yogi invests in Yoga practice his or her energy is moving up and down the central innermost channel and not leaking out anywhere.

When energy leaks out into the masculine channel to the right we tend to blame external elements for our inability to suceed. It is said that when the energy leaks into the female channel we tend to blame ourself for any shortcomings. I felt that Andy seemed really balanced in his approach and feel sure that Yoga has aided his sense of internal balance.

Although it is a huge time investment to attend Yoga Classes 6 days a week, it is worth attending as many classes as is reasonable for you and you can increase the frequency and the efficacy of your Yoga practice by just setting your alarm clock 10 minutes earlier, and doing just 10 minutes of Yoga for five days per week.

It would be interesting to hear the opinion of how Yoga has helped from Andy Murray?

The Growth of Yoga

"It continues to make me happy to watch yoga develop and grow from something that was previously viewed as something on the ‘alternative’ fringes of society to a more mainstream practice that can genuinely be accessed by people from all walks of life. I want to teach yoga in order to be part of this process; to give others tools to increase their physical and psychological well-being"

Jivamukti Teacher Nora Heilman Teaches at The Garden of Joy Ibiza

Yogashala Ibiza Presents Nora Heilman Jivamukti Workshops at the Garden of Joy Ibiza

Jacqueline Purnell and Nora Heilman are both certified Jivamukti yoga teachers and continue to study the Jivamukti Yoga method, created by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984. Nora is an 800-hr certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher and former dance artist / choreographer. A traveling yogi, she teaches classes, workshops and retreats internationally.

Nora will be holding workshops at the Garden of Joy in Ibiza on Sunday 2nd, Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th June 2013. Nora's workshops invite students to deeply investigate the direct experience of movement and life; and to experiment with the full range of yogic tools, from vigorous asana to the study of sacred texts, pranayama, meditation, chanting, and deep listening. An essential aspect of the yoga practice is a vegan lifestyle, which embodies the principle of non-violence and compassion for all beings. Nora loves to share the magical art of yoga with anyone who longs for transformation, greater kindness, and spiritual activation.

Originally German, Nora studied and lived in Amsterdam for many years, where she taught yoga and movement research at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO), Svaha Yoga Shala and The Movement Practice. She still guest teaches yoga and dance at the summer semester of the NYU Tisch School of The Arts in Amsterdam every year.

Nora offers her deepest gratitude to her teachers and spiritual guides: Sharon Gannon, David Life, her mentor Jessica Stickler, Tamar Samir, Monica Jaggi, Clive Sheridan, Richard Freeman, Adyashanti, and all the students who dedicate their time and energy to the practice of yoga, keeping this ancient tradition alive in the here and now. She would like to offer the knowledge that has been made available to her with the wish that all beings may be happy and free from suffering. Jacqueline met Tamar Samir and Jessica Stickler (nora's mentor) at Jivamukti in New York in 2012. Tamar and Nora will both be resident teachers at the Jivamukti Yoga School Berlin.

Nora's workshops start at 7pm at the Garden of Joy Ibiza on Sunday 2nd, Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th June 2013 and are 90 mins per session.

€45 per person for the 3 days or €20 drop in. To reserve a place please call Jacqueline on 00 34 689619141 or you can book via email by clicking this link: contact us.

INVERSION IMMERSIONS WORKSHOPS

Spice up your inversions!

Saturday 29th June: Focus Śraddhā in Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand)

The Saturday Asana session is a recipe to spend longer in Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) and to explore variations including Padmasana in Sarvangasana.
We will practice sequences designed to facilitate interesting and tasty variations while you are upside down. There will be some dynamic asana as a
starter, deeper hip opening postures as a palate cleanser and a hearty main course of Sarvangasana. Both Salamba and Nirlamba.
We will work with an initial diagnostic technique to establish the necessity for four blocks and a belt, however we would ask that all participants bring four
blocks and a belt as they are an integral part of the session and the process.
We will include some Mudra and Bandha for good measure.
All levels welcome, read up on Viparati Karani Mudra in the HYP and immerse yourself in the sun and the moon element of this posture.

All of the ingredients to warm up towards this highly accessible Asana!
We will practice sequences designed to facilitate you enjoying your time upside down.

Sunday 30th June: Focus Śraddhā in Pincha Mayurasana (Forearm Balance)

All of the colours of a bazaar come alive within the gateways to this posture. All levels welcome. Read up on the Peacock and the relevance to Kriya in the
HYP and this Tail Feather version really gives a colourful vibration. Bring your foam block as a support.

Yoga Teacher Training 2013: Our Teachers

The Ibiza Bija Yoga Alliance 200-hour Teacher Training Course is an intensive, residential course led by Jacqueline Purnell BWY FCT, E-RYT 500 Yoga Alliance Teacher. The three week course leads to a professional qualification which reflects ancient values at work in the modern world, where professionalism and the yoga of the Sanskrit scriptures meet.

The friendships and camaraderie engendered by the demanding schedule makes the process very uplifting and you will learn how to teach with confidence. Yogashala Ibiza teachers are accredited by the Yoga Alliance and our yoga teacher training programs comply with the standards established by the Alliance.

Meet the teachers:

Judith Secanell

Judith has grown up with modern and contemporary dance, and gymnastics. It has always been her passion and is a life long commitment. Her body is her focus, and to enhance her skills and abilities, she is now a yoga teacher.

She learnt her first “sun salutation” in Art Dramatic School where she studied to be an actress and then where she graduated from university (Cinema). After college she performed in many theatres across Spain, and has worked in TV roles and independent Spanish films and is still very active in productions as an actress and dancer, particularly in Musicals. Judith’s first Yoga experience was in Barcelona many years ago, with Kundalini Yoga, where she studied under “Laia Espot”.

For the past five years Judith has immersed herself in daily yoga practice and has studied with various teachers and types of yoga including Vinyasa, Kundalini, Hatha Dinamic and Asthanga. Her passion for Dance, Gymnastics, Theatre and Yoga, (and her passion for life and body improvement) recently took her to New York where she studied Yoga and became a certified Yoga Teacher.

For Judith, Yoga provides the perfect grounding in life and helps maintain calm in our busy city lives and has really enjoyed the transition from the Gym to the Yoga mat. She studied a 200 hour course of Vinyasa Yoga at the New York based “Three Sisters Yoga School” and recently graduated under the guidance of Jen Whinnen Vinyasa Style.

She is now a certified Vinyasa Yoga Teacher and Hatha Dinamic by the Yoga Alliance.

Yoga has given her a new found awareness and connection with her body, mind and spirit and it is this awareness and connection that she wants to share and pass on to her students. She believes that it is important to live a life full of passion and love, and her classes are bursting full of this. She loves the sense of community that yoga brings and she is grateful to be able to share it with her students. With humor and creative sequencing, her classes explore the efficiency of movement from pose to pose, focused on alignment, breath and interesting techniques. The choreographer in her has resulted in her creating innovative and unique “Vinyasa Sequences”.

Paul Harvey Training Day Review

On 28th April Jacqueline Purnell hosted an In-service Training Day for British Wheel of Yoga led by Paul Harvey.  The day was titled Prana, Patanjali and Practice. Paul reminds us that Yoga is more than a physical practice. Beyond the body Yoga provides a deep spiritual and emotional healing. Tim Killick attended the day and has sent in this review for those of us who didn't make it. Thanks Tim!

****

The IST day with Paul Harvey gave us a clear understanding of what Yoga should be, in contrast to what it has often become in yoga teaching. We are working in an exercise culture which influences the expectations of our students, who arrive at our classes for a whole host of reasons, most of them connected with health, fitness and body aesthetics. Paul demonstrated clearly that Yoga is more than this, and while we accept that the above are valid reasons for taking up yoga, we have a duty to convey its deeper significance to our students through a practice of Pranayama and meditation that acknowledges the challenges posed by the constant upwelling of our genetic and emotional past.

This refreshing rigour extended to an examination of the intermingling of Yoga and Vedanta. Paul was very clear that Yoga is not religious or even devotional, in a way that is promulgated by different schools of yoga, and some Yoga studios. He gave the example of ‘OM’, the most sacred Hindu symbol which has been incorporated into the yoga canon without fully explaining what it really is.

After lunch we examined different postures in relation to the upward and downward flow of Prana and apana, and the way in which the breath can ‘leak’ into the abdomen, reducing the power of the conscious breath.

Paul then rounded off the day with a quote that nicely summed up the embrace of Hatha and Raja yoga – ‘What good is the sword of wisdom to cut through the chains of illusion if the holder is too weak to wield it?’

Art + Yoga = Love!

Last Wednesday at Yogashala's Garden Of Joy pencils were sharpened, paint brushes were dipped, and clothes were stripped. The lovely Joel Rice came to lend his artistic knowledge (and cheeky humour) to a wonderful afternoon of art and giggles as he guided us through various styles and techniques of drawing and painting the naked human form. Joel proved to us that we all have an inner artist just busting to get out.

Places are still available so get in touch to book your spot and let your artistic side run free.

Massage at Yogashala with Diego

Are you lying comfortably? Perhaps you would like a pair of strong, masculine hands rhythmically working your tired muscles while you listen to the soft breezes gently sway through the garden, the scent of jasmine wafting, your thoughts receding, your mind emptying only to be filled with a profound sense of well-being and, dare I say it, bliss . Apologies, I got lost in dream just then, it must be this photo of the DIVINE Diego who will be The Garden Of Joy's resident massage therapist this summer.

Book now or forever regret missing out on the magic healing of Diego's supreme powers. Contact us.

Inspiring Lives – Tao Porchon-Lynch 93 Year Old Yogi

“Miracle only means to see that which is already inside of you”

Next time you hear that pesky little voice inside your head say something like “I’m too old” or “That’s not for me” turn your thoughts to Tao Porchon-Lynch. At 93 she is the oldest yoga teacher on record and she has no plans of stopping her life long passion. In fact, it seems that life is her passion.

Tao radiates love and the benefits of her yogic life are clearly manifested in her sparkling eyes and supreme physicality. After her recent hip replacement operation she said to her doctor “I don’t want to know about what I wont be able to do because I don’t believe it” and on recovery promptly sent the medico a photo of her in full lotus.

No excuses people – get out there and inspire!

"I love Yoga. It brightens my day and makes everybody smile"

Give Good Karma!

Our guest blogger today is the lovely Beth McNeil. Beth is currently completing her teacher training at Yogashala . Here she gives a thoughtful review of Karma Yoga practice and what it means in daily life. Thank you Beth!

**Karma Yoga is one of the many different types or ‘schools’ of yoga. Whereas ‘Hatha yoga’ concentrates on the physical and Bhakti the spiritual, Karma yoga joins the physical and mental and concentrates on an attitude with which a person approaches them both. It focuses on acting through selfless duty without even considering any selfish reward – be it a tangible or intangible one. It is actually incredibly complex and could be analysed and interpreted in many different ways. While looking for an example to demonstrate this complexity, I am reminded of an episode of the TV soap ‘Friends’ where characters Phoebe and Joey argue about whether there is such a thing as a ‘selfless good deed’ – because people generally act so that they can ultimately feel better which is of course the result of their good deed – so the way they acted was ultimately not purely selfless. In addition, if a person acts in a selfless manner and with true compassion towards another person, this may actually result in a negative outcome for a third party so their action was not 100% positive. This then leads to the topic of a past life with reincarnations, and the theory that if you work through the positives and the negatives in each life, with no expectation of reward, you will reach a final pure destiny - but this could take a good few incarnations. Good deeds are thought to cancel out self-centered deeds of the past. This topic probably runs the risk of being over-analysed but the principles are clear: Give Give Give! Give good actions under all circumstances and believe them to be directed to the divine consciousness at every step of execution. It is thought that practicing Karma yoga is the basic step before any other form of yoga can be practiced.**

Your mission for this glorious weekend is to GIVE GIVE GIVE. And then come back and tell us the results!

British Wheel Of Yoga Congress 2012

Last weekend Jacqueline shared an enlightening and fun time with fellow yogi colleagues and friends at the annual British Wheel Of Yoga Congress. Jacqueline is a Regional Training Officer BWY London. The theme for this year’s event was Yoga, Endeavour and Achievement – an apt theme for the organisation and also for Yogashala. There were so many inspiring talks from forays into anatomy, discussions on the meaning of Yoga in the modern day, history, philosophy, spirituality and more. Everyone is still digesting all of the information shared and enjoying the friendships ignited and reignited at the event. Can’t wait for next year!

Stefania Barker: Yoga Alliance Teacher Training Ibiza May 26th 2012

Born in Rome, Italy, Stefania has studied yoga for over eleven years. In 2008 Stefania gained The British Wheel of Yoga Teacher Diploma after studying under Jacqueline Purnell.
Jacqueline Purnell BritishWheel of Yoga Diploma Course Tutor & Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 500 for the Yoga Alliance.

Stefania's Testimonial about Jacqueline after her BWY Teacher Training:

“I have known Jacqueline for a number of years now; as my interest in yoga deepened, my appreciation of Jacqueline's value as a yoga teacher grew exponentially. I had practiced yoga with several different teachers when the time came I decided I wanted to be a teacher too; my choice of Jacqueline as my tutor was easy because I could clearly see she was the 'real deal'. Her knowledge of yoga in all its aspects is vast and her teaching style is adaptable to all levels of students, so that everybody attending her classes benefits in some way. The BWY Teacher Training Course I started over 2 years ago is drawing to an end. Jacqueline has made it thoroughly enjoyable through her varied teaching methods, constant support and by creating a very friendly atmosphere in the group. I am now confident I can teach yoga and enjoy doing so, forever striving to raise my standards closer to those of my dear tutor Jacqueline.”

After Jacqueline had introduced her to her beloved Teacher's Sharon and David the founders of Jivamukti Yoga in 2006, Stefania was inspired to follow in Jacqueline's footsteps and acquire their Teacher Training.

In 2010 she studied at the Omega Institute in New York with Sharon Gannon and David Life, gaining the Jivamukti Yoga Teacher Certification. Her classes are in a challenging vinyasa style (flowing asana sequences) to music, and incorporate breathing, meditation and deep relaxation.

David and Sharon also studied closely with Jacqueline's Guru known as Guruji: Shri Pattabhi Jois who taught the Astanga Vinyasa Tradition of Yoga at his home in Mysore India and was responsible through his tireless teaching for bringing Astanga Vinyasa to the west.

Stefania Barker will be teaching alongside Jacqueline Purnell and Chris James on the Yogashala Ibiza Teacher Training Course in June 2012. If you fancy a 'taster' for the course then why not attend a class or workshop with Stefania at The Garden Studio, 1a Overdale Road in South Ealing, W5.

The Terms of Engagement

The Terms of Engagement:

Distracted doesn’t even begin. Perhaps “anxiously anticipating, elated and overzealous, with a hint of nervous, a top note of free floating-mind wandering, and a smooth, detached finish,” would better describe it! Yes, that rings a bit closer to the truth. Just one month until teacher training begins, and I cannot sit still! Work seems an unnecessary detour; the stiffness from eight hours at a desk, a flagrant attack and undermining of my increased hours on the mat. Depressing news posts, endless chatter of economic woes, and worries of any sort, fall short to the calm and clarity following my morning meditations. Nights out on the town with friends appear a nuisance, as I’ve hopes of catching the sunrise the next morning instead, after discovering it an ethereal escape into a sliver of spirituality, a thrill unlike any glass of wine or champagne. Adventuring to new neighborhoods and restaurant openings has lost its luster just the same, as my increased awareness that energy poured into food preparations and organic farming methods hold equal importance to the food itself, and I am often left feeling sick, not of culinary joy! Even writing this post proves hard, as I’m sitting in front a computer, when really I am curious beyond imagination how breath, cellular function, and chakras integrate, or how I might incorporate Reiki trainings and Ayurvedic studies into potential asana sequences, and envisaging the change I want to bring through yoga. Well, then again, having listed it all, I suppose distracted will do. So yes, distracted, that I am! But, engaged? Well that’s clearly something I haven’t left room for in all of my Ibiza preparations. In fact, am paradoxically doing just the opposite of what yoga teaches us!

In defense of my distracted ways, however, this training is the first goal I have allowed myself to indulge in since my days playing college athletics. Since then, I have essentially banned myself from pursuing anything in full, until I knew it to be the right goal, as I have a drive stronger than I like to admit, one that led to three knee surgeries, a severely compromised immune system, and a lifetime of physical limitations. Albeit, I did achieve my goal of competing in college athletics, I realize now that my unwavering drive was more an unconscious state of disengagement than an admirable fortitude; it came with great compromise and an inevitable crash, that ironically enough, led me to yoga, so I cannot wave my finger too harshly on the experience, but should remain unforgiving to heed the lessons learned from it. Since playing, goal abstinence and yoga have been my protector and insight.

In the past month, since fully committing to teacher training, I find myself in old territory of blind ambition, and I am forced to ask what is my goal, after all? To abandon compassion or connection to others, desert favorite pastimes, and ignore all realities that do not mold me into a teacher?! No, no, I think not!! My goal is to bring the same health and well being of mind, body, and spirit, that yoga has brought me! But there is a greater truth to be acknowledged here, not just the ah-hah moment, but the struggle. I struggle, just as I did in over training my hurt knee, to not outstretch myself in my yogic objectives. My ambition is a reality, and as yoga has taught me, there is good and bad in everything and it is in fully accepting the entire truth, that we may choose the good.

And that is one goal, that through the teachings of, and teaching of yoga, I can achieve! But, I must remain engaged in it. After all, remaining mindful of breath and posture, while exploring a new restaurant is the same awareness as, and may even require more grit than, resolving to wake at dawn to hear the grass bristling at the pond near my house, in the hours before anyone is awake to clutter its song. Engaging with others might bring stress and distraction, but also gives way to a surprise belly laughter, producing similar effects of Agniprasana (breath of fire), but also insight to the interconnectedness and divinity of all things. The goal of yoga is not an unremitting tranquility, but rather a dogged intent to remain present and fully engaged. Engagement, requires forgiveness of the past, a compassion of the present, a patience for the future, and to remain neutral in the analysis of each. That is the goal, and the joy of yoga.

One month to go, and nothing but a mat and mindfulness to keep me on track!

Paz, love, joie!

Kasi

joie de vivre.

Ibiza Healing Day October 2nd 2011

Tomorrow 2nd October 2011, the amazing venue of Atzaro in Ibiza plays host to Ibiza's third Healing Day. The event is designed to enhance the senses through sight, sound, smell, taste and touch and to awaken the 'sixth' sense by exploring and sampling a variety of healing experiences and therapies whilst raising money for charity.

Alternative and holistic healing methods and therapies are gaining in popularity as people seek alternative ways in freeing themselves from day to day stress and anxiety. All the therapists and artists on the day will be giving their time for free making it a wonderful opportunity to try out many of the ‘taster’ experiences on offer. There are therapies, mini workshops and talks on many subjects such as Reiki, Yoga, Reflexology, Bowen Therapy, Massage, Oracle readings, Fasts, Cleansing, Detoxing, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and Business talks. There will be delicious food and stalls selling natural products and items beneficial to health, beauty and wellness as well as music, dance and a children's corner with entertainment, face painting, energy work....

...and much more!

The day has been designed to help people 'lighten-up' and enjoy life. A €5 fee for entrance and a donation of choice for each workshop is all that’s asked. All profits go to local charities including "The Ibiza Preservation Society' which Jacqueline has strong links with.

Sylvie Bader will be teaching Hatha Yoga and Jacqueline Purnell (British Wheel of Yoga Diploma course tutor and E-RYT 500 Yoga Alliance teacher) will be teaching Dynamic Yoga and Mother and Baby YOga at the event. Jacqueline & Sylvie continue to hold yoga classes throughout the week at El Galeria Elefante in Santa Gertrudis.

A journey to Yoga Teacher Training

Diving into Ibiza!

December 2005:

Home to New Orleans, after five months of displacement to Texas, following Hurricane Katrina. To say life had changed was an understatement of outstanding proportion. Days were limited to the light of the sun and moon, as electricity was sparse. The soundtrack of the city no longer trumpeted with vibrant swirls of activity, but hummed a quiet whimper of the national guard’s tanks and the city’s defeated sighs. Groceries and cafes only opened a few days a week, and old friends and familiar faces were hard to find. My days oscillated between resolute optimism and feelings of despair. With each passing day, it became more evident that life as I remembered had washed away, and that in order to re-enter consciousness, change was in order.

I couldn’t stand another moment of conversation on the dire forecast of recovery or nostalgia of how it used to be. I couldn’t stand another moment in front of the television, read another headline, or bear another defeated word. So, without much to do, direction to go, or people to see, I set out and walked. A lot. Although the area of map I covered was limited by huge stretches of devastation, I walked as far and long as I could, hoping to find life again. After weeks of aimless wandering, my dog refused to join, my hips ached, and it dawned on me: walking in circles around a city distraught by upheaval, was no more a life than stewing on the trauma of the past or fearing its possible doom. I could walk for years, on the edge of consciousness, never engaging fully in the past-future conversations, and feel productive in it. Yet no amount of walking, metaphorical or literal, could pardon our reality, nor outwit the fears of the community. Fear and hope were the reality of the return to New Orleans, whether I liked it or not! The only way to avoid drowning in the flood of my own avoidance was to dive into the present… both good and bad.

So I picked up my dog’s leash, headed back down the street, and dove into the plane of reality that was New Orleans. Like the city, I felt scared, hurt, hopeful, and determined. I opened my eyes and ears, and listened for how I might help it’s recovery, how I might help it rebuild, and how I might remain grounded in its reality even when it does not suit me. And at that moment, I found yoga…well, no, it is more accurate to say, yoga found me!

I saw a post outside the tennis club for a new Saturday morning yoga class. Ah hah, change!! At the time, all I knew about yoga was based on the unwrapped video from years ago, that my mom gave me in high school, after an invasive knee surgery, to help deal with stress. I pulled down the post to share with my mom… and in our cynically frozen, yet hopeful state, we shrugged our shoulders and said “why not?!”

That next Saturday did not hold the jubilant promise of a new beginning or facilitate the reentering of consciousness, however. Instead, it slapped with fear; fear of letting go of the old means of coping, of letting go of what was. I wanted to backpedal into my aimless walking, but already knew that I hadn’t out-walked this! So I went to yoga. I knew, just as I did the first time I jumped off the high dive at age six, life was never to be the same.

August 2011:

Six years later, I look back at this, and realize how far yoga has taken me, spiritually, mentally, and physically.... I hardly recognize that image as me! I also know that my journey in yoga is incomplete. As my first entry into consciousness taught me, remaining in it requires an unremitting commitment. Today I find myself feeling similarly displaced, where neither the past nor present remain relevant to my path. From Katrina to my corporate world of Chicago, I dove deep into the trenches of reality. The currents have taken me through rapid and stagnant waters, and through the crystal clear acceptance of fear. I’ve learned to surf, to wade, to float, and paddle; to see synchronicities and trust their guidance. And here I am, up for air: sensing my spirituality and the oneness of all things, with the acceptance that reality has changed, yet again…. and the crackling excitement of knowing, that I too, must change, and choose consciousness, all over again…

In early June, this pending change became irrefutable. Signs were all around me: new friends, overheard words, seemingly accidental conversations, and dreams of October. Unsure of what direction to go, I refocused on yoga, for clarity. I went to the Internet, searching for both Spanish and French lessons, and a new yoga class. Not altogether, but by the genius of Google, the combined query produced YogaShala Teacher Training, in Ibiza, Spain, in October. Ahh hah!! Although I had investigated several teacher training programs in years past, all of which in India, when I saw YogaShala, I knew it was the one.... And I recognized that moment, as after Katrina, where I could choose to keep on walking the periphery of this past world, or dive into consciousness. I submitted final payment and application this morning.

Although immediately bombarded by thoughts of what will October bring, through my trust and path in Yoga, in Oneness, I have not the desire to backpedal or fear what will be. Instead, I embrace an unprecedented courage and inspiration… Countdown to Ibiza: 2 months!

Paz, Love, Joie!

Kasi

Beyond Dynamic Yoga: The Power of Ashtanga

William Robertson and Jacqueline Annabelle Purnell present the increasingly popular Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga DVD, Beyond Dynamic Yoga: The Power of Ashtanga. It offers an accessible program suitable for fit beginners and advancing practitioners. Both instructors possess over 30 years of experience, achieved from study with the most important yoga teachers on the planet.

The DVD includes an Essential Warm Up (used to improve strength and stamina) which is presented before the complete Primary Series as an easy-to-follow step-by-step process. This unique section continues to prepare qualities of smooth movement, stable breathing and mental engagement for all students.

The primary sequence of four is presented for the first time with invaluable perspective gained from study with this tradition's other leading innovators, BKS Iyengar and Desikichar.

William Robertson is one of the most extensively trained instructors in Europe, having established a unique Progressive Individual Yoga Instruction programme at the West London Yogashala. Jacqueline Annabelle Purnell holds a British Wheel of Yoga Teaching Diploma and completed Derek Ireland's Ashtange Vinyasa Teacher Training in India. They run yoga retreats in Thailand, Egypt, India and Ibiza.

Beyond Dynamic Yoga can dramatically improve your health and the shape of your body; it increases your internal energy and will steadily improve your physical responsiveness. Yoga classes are vitally important for the serious student and practitioner, so DVD's like this are essential for some guidance to practise at home between classes.

Stefania Barker: Yoga Teacher Training Ibiza May 26th 2012

Born in Rome, Italy, Stefania has studied yoga for over eleven years. In 2008 Stefania gained The British Wheel of Yoga Teacher Diploma after studying under Jacqueline Purnell British Wheel of Yoga Diploma Course Tutor & Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher 500 for the Yoga Alliance.

Her Testimonial about Jacqueline after her BWY Teacher Training:

After Jacqueline had introduced her to her beloved Teacher's Sharon and David the founders of Jivamukti Yoga in 2006 Stefania was inspired to follow in Jacqueline's footsteps and acquire their Teacher Training.

Headstand Workshops in Ibiza

Headstands and Shoulder Stands, otherwise known as inverted asanas or poses, are the mother and father of all yoga asanas; the shoulder stand Sarvangasana being the mother and headstand Sirsasana, the father. In the ancient Sanskrit texts, along with the lotus Padmasana, they are considered the most important yoga asanas and are energetically opposite.

Headstands develop our masculine qualities; heat the body, stimulate the nervous system, tone the neck muscles and stimulate the mind, and shoulder stands develop our feminine qualities; neutralize the body and calm the nervous system. However, both asanas allow the blood to flow from the heart without the force of gravity, thus without strain and therefore clean, healthy blood is allowed to circulate around the neck and chest. The change in gravitational pull on the body affects the abdominal organs so that the bowels move freely and constipation is relieved. They are soothing to the nervous system and good to practice when one is tense, upset, and nervous or feeling irritated. The weight of the abdominal organs on the diaphragm initially gives a sense of constriction; with practice however this physiological inversion encourages deep breathing, which in turn gently massages the internal organs and the contemplation one feels helps calm the mind. A little time spent upside down everyday gives us the opportunity to feel happier and more confident.

PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT A HEADSTAND WHEN YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN IF YOU ARE NEW TO YOGA or at least not within your first couple of years of practice. To do this asana it is vital to have at least the weekly guidance of a trained teacher to ensure you are not compounding any mistakes. Working closely with an experienced teacher you will allow the spine to become properly aligned, improve posture and facilitate good breathing. If you want to invest more time in headstands then you must ensure you have the most highly qualified and experienced teacher available. To find your nearest teacher go to our About Us page on the Yogashala Ibiza website and click on the BWY teacher logo or click here to go straight to the BWY website and enter your postcode in the box on the homepage. It may be worth emailing a variety of teachers and ask their views as some will be more experienced than others. It may even be worth investing in a one to one. Also check with your GP that you have no conditions that would contradict.

How to do a Headstand

Firstly place a yoga mat or a folded blanket on the floor to pad your head and forearms. Kneel on the floor and keeping your feet on the ground, interlock your fingers, placing your forearms on the floor with your elbows directly under your shoulders and shoulder width apart. Press the wrists firmly into the floor and roll the upper arms outwards then place the top of your head on the floor making sure the back of your head is resting against the palms of the hands.

Inhale, and then with your toes on the floor lift your knees up off the floor keeping your legs straight. To continue with this asana please make sure you have your teacher present. Check with your teacher and when your teacher feels you are ready to perform a headstand in class this is then how you would proceed…

Exhale and slowly lift both feet up at the same time keeping the weight evenly balanced between the two forearms. A fail safe mechanism to ensure you can lift into this asana safely is if your abdominals are powerful enough to lift both knees whilst squeezed together. Squeeze the inner knees as if holding a sheet of paper between them. Refrain from using walls, corners where walls meet or other props as they can disguise poor alignment. Your cervical spine is so precious so we must be vigilant and extremely careful. To avoid kicking the legs up, another fail safe mechanism is to draw your knees up above your pelvis before straightening your legs again making sure your knees are firmly squeezed together. When the legs are fully lengthened push up through the big toes and stay for 10 seconds. Exhale and very slowly come down the same way as you went up, knees squeezed together, working your abdominals and to be sure both feet touch the floor at the same time.

To gain the confidence to start your headstand practice Yogashala Ibiza offer weekend Headstand Workshops at their eco-friendly yoga centre in Ibiza where experienced and highly qualified tutors work with students on a one-2-one basis. The next Headstand Workshop is Sat 11th & Sun 12th May 2011. For more information on availability and prices go to the Costs & Dates page on the Yogashala Ibiza website

Benefits Of Yoga

One of the most important things when embarking on a new slimming and fitness regime is that your mind remains positive and healthy. As we all know, yoga helps to achieve and maintain a positive, focused, calm and controlled state of mind - but what exactly can we gain physically from this wonderful ancient yet powerful practice of Yoga?

On a physical level, yoga and its cleansing practices have proven to be extremely effective for various disorders as well as being a fantastic way to achieve a beautifully sculpted and healthy body. Yoga is the only ancient workout that tones your body not just on the outside but from deep in the inside. When you practice yoga it works deeply on many different parts of your inner body massaging all your vital organs therefore helping to detoxify and thoroughly cleanse your system, clearing out blockages and helping in the smooth flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients. Yoga is also extremely effective in increasing flexibility, increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons and is excellent at toning all of the muscles.

Yoga through MEDITATION helps the mind to work in sync with the body enabling people to achieve extraordinary physical feats, which proves beyond doubt the power of the mind and body connection. Stress is a number one killer yet can be corrected through meditation alone.

The meditative practices through yoga help in achieving an emotional balance through DETACHMENT. What it means is that meditation detaches you from your immediate surroundings, it is a state in which a person overcomes his or her attachment to desire for things, people or concepts of the world and thus attains a heightened perspective which in turn creates a remarkable calmness and a positive outlook.

The ancient yogis practised yoga and meditation for self realization (or enlightenment) for very long periods of time. This required tremendous physical fitness, energy and the ability to survive on next to nothing. The yoga asanas (or postures) helped to put controlled and systematic pressure on the various glands and internal organs located in their bodies. This stimulated and regulated their body’s hormone production. A healthy hormone balance naturally helps you to stay fit and active.

The daily practice of Pranayama (breathing exercises) and Dhyana (meditation) is considered to be very beneficial along with the yoga asanas as they compliment each other and give you amazing results when done correctly. The yoga asanas are done in a flowing or slow systematic movement and the key is in holding the pose for a longer duration while you balance yourself without straining.

Yoga stretches, tones and strengthens your spine, internal organs and all your muscles giving you a beautifully sculpted body that not only looks great but is healthy as well. You also feel energetic and fresh yet calm and peaceful. Your skin and hair shines with health as it makes your entire system clean and optimized to the best level.

For more information on the benefits of yoga check out www.healthandyoga.com. Remember, if purchasing from the Health and Yoga website make sure to include richmondyoga@yahoo.com in the referrer box when checking out for a 5% discount.

I loved the morning walks, the meditation and that we started teaching by day 2! It really built up my confidence and sense of grounding and security in teaching.” Lisa, Yorkshire.

“The teacher’s instructions were always very easy to understand, clear & precise. She has a lot of knowledge and I felt free to ask questions at any time. In all, I’ve learnt so much about yoga and I feel very ready to teach thanks to this training. I am very pleased with what this course has given me”. Sylvia, Norway.

“Although feedback was straight to the point I felt valued and respected and was encouraged to develop my learning at all times. Positive feedback was given as soon as I earned it and I really appreciated this. I now feel fully motivated and able to focus on developing the knowledge I have gained on this course”. Monique, Spain.

Yogashala Ibiza also offers yoga diving classes, dynamic yoga classes, therapeutic yoga classes and yoga classes for pregnant women, as well as postnatal recovery and baby yoga sessions.

Tantric Tourists

Lara Bauman and I had the most poignant time on Saturday night we were both pooped after teaching at the Yoga Show at Olympia and Lara had Bali belly but we got cosy by the fire and watched a pre-screening of this amazing film:

A day in the life of a Yoga Teacher Trainee

Woke up at 5.30am when the alarm went off. Left the hotel and started the 10 min walk to the yoga retreat. My roommate and myself decided to walk in silence as recommended by our teacher so I used this time to practice my positive affirmation.

Arrived at the centre and swept the platform ready for our morning meditation. The group did really well and we managed to sit for 40 minutes. I’ve really progressed in my personal meditation and would never have imagined meditating for this long at home. Being away from everything and listening to the nearby sounds of the waves and crickets have really helped. Something feels different being on the island. Is it the energy?

After meditation we discussed the Bhagavad Gita by using study cards and texts. Reading the book before I got here has really helped. We looked behind the use of metaphor and how we could apply the meaning to our lives today.

8am Jacqueline led a yoga class and incorporated some different styles into the practice as well as the 'Sivananda' inspired sequence that we have been learning.

10am we went up to the house, blessed the food and had some well needed brunch cooked lovingly by Sol. Decided to go down to the beach for our 4 hour break and do some revision for the exam. Also need to think about my sequence for the demonstration.

As always 2pm came around very quickly. We all congregated by the pool for our afternoon lecture on anatomy and physiology. I wish I had listened more in my science classes! We then did our teaching practice, which went quite well today. I was chosen to teach the sun salutations. I’m really starting to grasp the sequence now – thank goodness!

Ate a delicious vegetarian curry for supper and then we all did our designated jobs (karma yoga) I watered the garden and swept the area by the pool . Tried to do my positive affirmations again but Jonathon was making me laugh with his impressions!

Settled down at 8pm on the platform for my favourite time of the day. It feels so peaceful and settling when the sun goes down. There is something about the evening energy that brings us closer together as a group. Maybe its because the topics of discussion are usually quite intimate and powerful. Today we discussed reincarnation. Finished at 10pm and walked back to the hotel with the others.

Fell in to bed extremely tired. Realised once again however that it was that lovely tired that I used to experience as a child having spent the day with the horses. Not the stressed, computer induced lethargy that I have been experiencing all to often in recent years.
